WHAT IS DRIFTING?

Picture

Drifting is a high-skill motorsport discipline where drivers intentionally induce oversteer, causing the rear wheels to lose traction while maintaining precise control of the car through high-speed corners. The objective is to navigate turns in a controlled slide, requiring a delicate balance of throttle, steering, braking, and clutch techniques to sustain the drift.
Unlike traditional racing, where lap times determine success, drifting competitions are judged based on four main criteria:

  1. Angle – The degree of oversteer relative to the racing line, with more aggressive angles demonstrating higher skill.
  2. Line – The optimal path through a corner, often following designated clipping points to show precision.
  3. Style – The overall execution, including fluidity, commitment, and flair, showcasing a driver’s confidence and control.
  4. Proximity – In tandem battles, drivers are scored on how closely they follow their opponent while maintaining precision and aggression.
Drifting originated from the winding mountain roads of Japan in the 1970s and was popularized by legendary drivers like Kunimitsu Takahashi and Keiichi Tsuchiya, known as the "Drift King." Since then, the sport has evolved into an internationally recognized motorsport, with professional series such as Formula Drift, D1 Grand Prix, and Drift Masters European Championship showcasing top-tier talent.

Modern drift cars are highly specialized machines, often featuring rear-wheel drive, turbocharged engines, and modifications such as reinforced chassis, angle kits for increased steering range, and custom suspension setups to optimize drift control.

The sport's appeal lies in its combination of technical precision and artistic expression. The high-speed, tire-smoking action, combined with the spectacle of cars sliding inches apart, makes drifting one of the most visually captivating motorsports. Its culture has also been fueled by media, from video games like Need for Speed and Gran Turismo to films like The Fast and the Furious: Tokyo Drift, further cementing its place in global motorsport.

LINE

**Line** refers to the precise path that a driver takes through the track, following the ideal route marked by the clipping points. In drifting, the goal is to maintain accuracy by staying as close to these points as possible while maintaining speed and control. Judges evaluate how well drivers adhere to the prescribed line, rewarding precision and consistency.

ANGLE

**Angle** is all about how much the car’s rear end swings out during the drift. Drivers are scored on their ability to maintain an aggressive yet controlled angle throughout the course. The more extreme the drift angle without losing control, the higher the score. It’s a delicate balance between pushing the limits of the car's grip and maintaining fluidity.

STYLE

**Style** encompasses the flair, energy, and overall impact of the drift. Judges look for a combination of smooth transitions, throttle control, and the driver’s confidence in handling the car. It’s not just about technical execution but also about delivering an exciting and dynamic performance that stands out, capturing the true spirit of drifting.
